IGU
Commission on Gender and Geography meeting, Nara, Japan, 1-4 August 2013
Objectives
of the Conference
Preceding the 33rd International
Geographical Congress in Kyoto, the Commission on Gender and Geography invites
everyone who is interested in gender issues in geography to Nara for an
international pre-conference which is organized by a local study group. You are
cordially invited to join the meeting.
General
Theme
“Gender, Power and
Knowledge: Building Global Networks through Local Sensitivities”
This general theme highlights the following three points: 1) recognizing a (the?) significance of gender issues concerning knowledge and power as ‘situated’ ones; not from universal or a view from ‘nowhere’ and not falling into essentialism or local parochialism’: 2) reconstructing a feminist geography which arises from different places and different voices including not only the West but also the East and the Global South: 3) (re)constituting global and sustainable networks by discussing the above matters in the pre-conference and the IGU Kyoto and after.
It is not necessary for every participant to
be a presenter. But we hope that every participant will have a chance to
discuss the general theme.
Conference

A registration for the pre-conference and
welcome dinner will be start on 1 August.
Paper panels will run on the second and
